Attempts to steal a moped from a man who had stopped for the ATM: arrested in Modica

He attempted to steal a moped in the Modica Sorda neighborhood but in the end he was also arrested for resisting a public official. The police arrested a foreigner living in the city.

The facts

The incident occurred while a citizen was withdrawing money from an ATM at his bank and had left his moped parked nearby. Suddenly, a 22-year-old man jumped on the vehicle and tried to start it to escape. The man’s screams destabilized the thief, who shortly after fell to the ground after a few meters, abandoning the moped he had just stolen.

The police squad intervened immediately after being alerted by the man who was recovering his vehicle abandoned by the thief. The officers, based on the description provided by the victim, tracked down the young man within minutes. As soon as he was spotted, the thief attempted to flee, also putting himself in danger of being hit by cars. However, the officers managed to safely block him despite the resistance, and handcuffed him before taking him to the police station.

The images of the attempted theft, recorded by the bank’s surveillance cameras, confirmed what happened. Consequently, the 22-year-old was arrested in flagrante delicto for attempted theft and resisting a public official, and subsequently placed under house arrest at the disposal of the Judicial Authority.

Furthermore, the young man was found in possession of a smartphone that was found stolen the same morning and was returned to its rightful owner. Therefore, he was reported in a state of freedom for receiving stolen goods.

The arrest was validated during the summary trial, during which the young foreigner was given the precautionary measure of the obligation to remain in residence and to report to the judicial police.
