Bologna, 1 July 2024 – Joey Saputo it will be Bolognese. A sign of respect and gratitude towards what has been done for the city through its football team: the City Council unanimously approved (31 votes out of 31) the awarding of the honorary citizenship to the president of Bologna.
The proposal had come from the mayor Matteo Lepore after the conquest of the Champions Leaguethe culmination of a journey that saw Saputo take over Bologna in 2014. In ten years, the chairman saved the club from the brink of bankruptcy, giving it stability in Serie A and finally the chance to play in Europe’s top competition, making an entire city dream.
Saputo: “Great honor and pride”
“I have already had the opportunity to thank Mayor Lepore when he proposed the award of honorary citizenship,” he declares Joey Saputo, “and today I extend my thanks to the entire City Council who voted for the proposal unanimously. As I said then, it is for me a great honor and pride become an honorary citizen of Bolognaalso because I have felt an integral part of this Community for a long time. The day of the official award ceremony will represent for me a moment of Big emotionbut also the opportunity to express my gratitude to all the citizens of Bologna”.
The motivations
These are reasons in approving the granting of honorary citizenship to the Canadian president: “The determination of Known he ensured that the club was always projected towards the future, in the continuous search for that balance that would lead to the coveted ranking positions strongly desired by the president. Even in his experience at the helm of Bologna BFC, alongside sporting commitment there was no lack of participation in charitable initiatives in favor of the territory”.
