The officers of the Modica Police Station have arrested a foreigner resident in Modica for the attempted theft of a moped in the Sorda neighborhood and for resisting a public official. A citizen was making an ATM withdrawal at his bank and was leaving his vehicle parked nearby when, suddenly, a 22-year-old man climbed onto the vehicle and tried to start it to escape. The man’s screams at the thief destabilized him and he clumsily fell to the ground after a few dozen meters, abandoning the moped he had just stolen. A few moments later, the police patrol car intervened, on territory control duty, alerted by the man who was recovering the vehicle abandoned by the thief. The officers, having acquired the very first information on the perpetrator, knowing who he could be, specifically a person known to the officers for thefts against property and already arrested in the past, immediately began looking for him. Thanks to the valuable description provided by the victim, the police were able to track down the offender in a few minutes, who, at the sight of them, fled hastily, even risking being hit by passing cars. The officers were able to stop him promptly and safely, despite the young man’s strenuous intention to avoid capture – who continued to struggle – they managed to handcuff him and take him to the police station. The images of the attempted theft, captured by the cameras of the bank’s video surveillance circuit, highlighted the entire event and for these reasons the 22-year-old was arrested in flagrante delicto for attempted theft and resisting a public official and placed under house arrest at the disposal of the judicial authorities. The young thief was also found in possession of a smartphone that, after careful research, turned out to be the object of a theft that had taken place that morning, then returned to its rightful owner, for which reason he was also reported at liberty for receiving stolen goods. The arrest was validated in the summary trial and following the hearing the foreigner was given the precautionary measure of being obliged to remain in the country and report to the judicial police.
