CATANIA – “Hi Dad…. I’m Manuela, I lost my phone…I have to buy a new one…. Can you top up my prepaid card?”: this is how a scammer tried to hook his victim, a 78-year-old man living in Catania, with some messages sent via Whatsapp.

The scam was foiled by the police of the Borgo Ognina Public Safety Police Station, as stated in a press release from the Catania Police Headquarters. The police reported a 46-year-old resident in the province of Naples for fraud.

The scam via messages

The scammed man, after reading the message, he believed it was really his daughter and made a bank transfer of 990 euros. He later called her daughter who told him that she had not lost her cell phone or sent any messages, and at this point the man realized that he had been the victim of a scam.

The 78-year-old meanwhile received another message from the scammer, still pretending to be his daughter Manuela, asked him to make another bank transfer of 850 euros for the purchase of a latest generation tablet. At this point the man turned to the agents of the Borgo Ognina police station to file a complaint.

The investigations

Investigations have begun through the analysis of bank flows and telephone numbers, the police managed to identify the perpetrator who was reported to the Judicial Authority for fraud.

Facts of this kind can be read in the statement from the Catania Police Headquarters, these are not isolated cases but happen daily. In the event that you receive messages on your telephone, email or social media in which a relative or loved one claims to have lost their mobile phone and asks for money because they are in difficulty, you must not comply with the request without the appropriate checks.
