Siciliacque does not ensure water supplies, Trapani resorts to shifts

The drought emergency in Sicily is starting to show serious critical issues also in the Trapani area and in the capital city. For months Siciliacque has not ensured water supplies in Trapani which last year reached almost 100lt sec. Today Trapani must therefore try to be self-sufficient even with respect to the decline in sources as well as guarantee supplies to the municipality of Misiliscemi as well as to the logistics centers of the Fire Brigade, Air Force, Army, Port Authority and to all the central bodies and offices of the PA. Added to this is the doubling of the summer population thanks to tourist flows.

In relation to this, it is also necessary to deal with persistent structural problems in the historic center with homes (many of which have been transformed into B&Bs) without sufficient storage containers and therefore dependent on the consistency of supply, albeit on alternate days. Pending the desired positive outcome on the strengthening of withdrawal actions from municipal wells, distribution shifts must be changed and therefore tomorrow – 1 July 2024 – no water will be distributed to allow sufficient accumulation to guarantee supply on the 2nd July to all users in the historic center and to follow, subject to verification, on 3 July in new Trapani.

The distribution shift will undergo the following schedule: accumulation on Monday, distribution in the historic center on Tuesday. Based on the arrivals from Bresciana (we are working on the restoration of another 5 wells), a statement will be issued on Tuesday on the distribution in the new Trapani area.

The situation is therefore always very difficult throughout the island. “To mitigate the water emergency, the Sicilian Civil Protection is making a great commitment to guarantee concrete responses to the most affected municipalities. It is doing so with the first interventions on the water networks, with the purchase of tankers, the redevelopment and construction of wells and pipelines and through synergistic work with the territories and the water ATI. For this I thank the director of the Department of Civil Protection, Eng. Salvo Cocina and the President of the Region, Renato Schifani, for the great work done. Starting from the control room established at Palazzo d’Orleans and desired by President Schifani, with the task of coordinating and calling on all implementing entities to follow the timetable drawn up to counteract the critical situation”. This was stated in a note by the regional deputy of Forza Italia and vice-president of the Environment and Territory Commission at the Ars, as well as mayor of the Municipality of Capri Leone, the Hon. Bernadette Grasso.
