SOS along the cemetery road

Mechanical shovel in action to remove several quintals of waste from the landfill near the graves in the cemetery Bridges, in the eastern area of Naples. This morning the cleanup began to recover the waste illegally abandoned over the last few years in a corner of the unnamed street for which, amidst dangers and degradation, full redevelopment is awaited.

The intervention concerns, in particular, the piles stuck in the section closest to the intersection with via Mario Palermo. Over the course of recent years, numerous materials of all kinds have been dumped at the entrance to the municipal space which was to be used to further expand the perimeter of the cemetery of via Argine. On the ground construction waste, plastics, metals, bulky materials and other waste which will now have to be recovered and characterized as required by the procedures. The extraordinary operation is carried out by Asìa Napoli, a municipal company of Palazzo San Giacomo, on the orders of the “City Hygiene” service of the Municipality of Naples.

«Finally the area which has long been degraded and abandoned will be reclaimed. The first next step will be the redevelopment of the road and perhaps making the area safe”, he says Daniele Simonetticouncilor of the VI Municipality and group leader of “Azioni per Napoli”, which highlights the close collaboration established with the councilor of the same body Domenico Feronegroup leader of “Manfredi mayor”.

In the meantime, we await the demolition of the ruin located on the same road which, in addition to allowing access to the cemetery, connects via Argine and via Mario Palermo. The municipal building, in worrying structural conditions, represents a danger for pedestrians and for the two homeless people who still occupy it despite the absence of electricity and drinking water. To the pitiful hygienic conditions – a ruin, not a bathroom, the sewage discharge comes directly onto the road – there are added the critical issues due to a further pile of brushwood and waste located on the other end of the anonymous road.

For years, despite appeals, pedestrians who reach the cemetery are forced to slalom around potholes and ditches that interrupt the avenue which has no road surface and is not serviced by the public lighting. For this reason, traders and residents hope that the cleanup that has just begun and the upcoming demolition of the unsafe house may be the first concrete signs to restore dignity to this corner of the populous neighborhood of East Naples.
