Campi Flegrei, the earthquake is scary but ten people show up for the exercise

The mayor of Pozzuoli: “We need to understand the reason for this low participation. We must all ask ourselves: citizens and institutions”

NAPLES – Fear in Naples is not 90. It is barely 10. And so in Pozzuoli the second day of the Civil Protection exercise to test the procedures foreseen by the planning for bradyseism in the Campi Flegrei is a fiasco. There were just under 300 people booked, but very few people showed up on site, just about ten people.

Activities began yesterday with a simulation of a major seismic swarm, while today the tests relating to the evacuation procedures for the citizens of Naples, Pozzuoli and Bacoli began, with a sample of the population and the transfer to the hubs. But in Pozzuoli, compared to around 300 people booked, in the waiting area set up in via Napoli, there were very few people present this morning.

Mayor Luigi Manzoni spoke to the press about what happened: “We are still experiencing a period of emergency, I can think that the low participation is due to this. At the end of the day, however, we will take stock, have a complete report and make an evaluation. Maybe we will have to work on some critical issues that have arisen. Then, of course, those who don’t operate don’t make mistakes, I think we need to actually understand what the reason for this low participation was and we must all ask ourselves about this: citizens and institutions“.

The mayor states that this is not a sign of mistrust towards the population, and adds: “The activities on bradyseism have never been carried out to date and I can say that the prevention and mitigation activities will certainly never end. This is certain because the phenomenon of bradyseism will never go away from Pozzuoli, we must continue, prevention will never end.” For the future, Manzoni, recalling that “the organization is in charge of the national civil protection”, highlights how there is willingness to “carry out any exercise at any time, especially in a period like this which is an emergency”.
