Faenza eco-logic: “Tree felling in via San Mamante”

“In recent days the felling of a row of 200 large trees (conifers) is underway in Via San Mamante, before the Church, after the entrance to Via Roncona. A resident took photos and videos and sent them to us. She told us that the owner had authorization from the municipality of Faenza.

We will access the documents to confirm this. However, we are astounded by this massacre, which is also in the middle of the nesting period, violating European directive no. 2009/147/EC which absolutely prohibits the cutting of branches and trees during the bird nesting period (which goes from March to August) and also law 157/1992, art. 21. But regardless of the period, it is absolutely harmful and counterproductive to cut down large trees, which absorb tons of CO2, provide shade and provide great ecosystem benefits, including retaining soil and helping to absorb water. The area has also been affected by landslides and mudslides, cutting down all the large trees will make the situation worse. Don’t tell us that they will be compensated for with new plantings, we all know that the small plants will not be able to compensate for the large trees that are cut down, unless after many years and unless they dry out (which unfortunately happens frequently, due to lack of irrigation or diseases).

In short, the environmental damage is enormous and irreparable. Is this how we plan to combat the climate crisis?”
