“We need around 500 more blood donors for the months of July, August and September so as not to delay blood transfusions to those who need them at the Cervello hospital in Palermo”. There are 300 chronically ill patients cared for by the Cervello Hospital: 200 are thalassemic and 100 have sickle cell anemia – highlights Aurelio Maggio, from the Hematology and Rare Diseases department – and they need blood every fortnight. In these subjects, if the waiting time to receive blood exceeds ten days, both the heart and the liver suffer, because the oxygen in the blood begins to run out.
“I am addressing all the people of Palermo – says Giannopolo – and regular donors, I ask them to come and donate blood before going on holiday and also to new donors to make this gesture of love”. To be able to be a blood donor you must have 18 to 65 years old, enjoy good health, do a screening and pre-donation to check blood values.
