Inaugurated this morning (Saturday 22 June), with the mayor also present at the ceremony Elena Carnevalithe pedestrian connection between the bastion of San Giovanni and via Tre Armi in the Upper Town, a work promoted and financed by the Parco dei Colli di Bergamo.

The new connection

The path, three and a half meters wide and 36 meters long, connects the ancient arched “sortie” present at the foot of the walls at the connection point between the wall, where the fire outlets are present and clearly visible, and the large wall of the bastion. The new connection represents the first connection between the interior and exterior of the historic fortification, through the recovery and valorization of the gunboat.

A new important pedestrian access point to the Upper Town, until now closed to public use, which will allow the expansion of the network of pedestrian paths of the historic “staircases”, much loved and frequented by the citizens of Bergamo and by the ever-increasing number of tourists. The intervention was possible thanks to Parco dei Colli’s acquisition of a privately owned area at the foot of the bastion, overcoming a situation that until now had prevented its feasibility.

«The reopening of the sortie of the bastion of San Giovanni – explained the professor Renato Ferlinghettimember of the Park Management Council – allows us to observe the internal stratification of the Walls, overcoming the concept that they are not a “wall”, but a complex architectural structure developed on three floors, for a linear development of over five kilometres”.
