Tarquinia – The most classic of political challenges arises again between Civitavecchia and Tarquinia.

In the two municipalities, the only ones together with Palestrina that need a run-off in Lazio, a right-left “quadrangle” is taking place which sees, in broad terms, two parallel games being played: the Democratic Party and the 5 Star Movement against the Brothers of Italy .

Tarquinia

In the province of Viterbo the outgoing mayor Alessandro Giulivi, supported by the lists of FdI, Futura, Forza Italia – Noi moderates, Udc and Rinascimento, is undermined by Francesco Sposetti, victorious in the first round and supported by the Democratic Party, Civitas civic list, Movimento 5 stars and green alliance left.

In the first round, out of 13,741 eligible voters, 9,883 voters (71.92%) voted with 235 invalid ballots, 48 blank ballots and no contested ballots.

With 4,009 votes against Giulivi’s 2,438, Sposetti is therefore the favorite for a duel which was very heated during the election campaign and will be decided by whoever is best able to intercept the 2,045 preferences of Renato Bacciardi who, like the other candidates, has decided not to take sides.

Beyond the political controversy, present at every session, during the electoral campaign the centre-left focused heavily on dialogue with citizens and on some current issues such as ZTL, traffic lights and lido, while the centre-right focused its strategy on the various macro projects completed or in any case started during the last five years such as Bucone, Etruscan cinema, former paper mill, former slaughterhouse, seafront, energy hub, cliff and Ex Cale factory.

Different story, but same sides, in Civitavecchia which, after the retirement of Ernesto Tedesco, will in any case see a new mayor take over the municipality compared to the outgoing one. In the province of Rome the advantage is for Massimiliano Grasso, supported by the Fratelli d’Italia, Grasso mayor, Lega, La Ricerca and Civitavecchia 2030 lists.

In the first round, out of 43,632 eligible voters, 27,676 voters (63.43%) voted with 567 invalid ballots, 146 blank ballots and 23 contested ballots.

For Grasso 9,323 votes which represent a very significant gap on the 5,767 preferences received by Marco Piendibene, supported by the Democratic Party, the Civic Union and the Left Green Alliance and which in recent days has made an alliance with the 5 Star Movement. For the centre-right, however, there was no official agreement but maximum support from Paolo Poletti who received 4,842 votes during the first round.

As regards the municipality of Palestrina, 22 thousand inhabitants south of Rome, Igino Macchi of the centre-left has a strong advantage over Giuseppe Cilia of the centre-right (5,045 votes against 2,668 in the first round).

Voting takes place tomorrow, Sunday 23 June, from 7am to 11pm and Monday 24 June from 7am to 3pm. In addition to the electoral card, citizens will have to show an identification document. The preference towards one or the other mayor must be expressed by crossing out the candidate’s name but, as the latest circular from the Ministry of the Interior explains, the vote is considered valid “even in the presence of multiple voting signs affixed to the candidate’s name and /o on one or more linked list symbols”.
