Guglionesi: “International Lace Day”: ancient knowledge, new opportunities

GUGLIONESI. The tenth edition of International Lace Day will be held on 23 June in various places around the world. This initiative was born with the aim of making lace known and demonstrating how much it is still loved and widespread.

This edition will see the presence, among many, of the Guglionesi community.

The Circolo Arci F. Jovine, in fact, has joined this important initiative by virtue of the wonderful experience achieved with the “bombolo lace” course, started in 2018 and coordinated by Bianca Gentile. A “course” that has animated the Guglionesi community in these difficult years, facilitating the (re)construction of social relationships, disrupted in particular by the pandemic; which has contributed to promoting that artistic and manufacturing knowledge which, although constituting a “cultural heritage”, is marginalized by socio-economic dynamics.

But beyond the numbers, artistic and traditional craftsmanship represents a “basic element” of the Italian economy and manufacturing, an identity trait of the territories, a fundamental component of our country’s tourist offer, a creative industry that can give young generations new entrepreneurial and employment opportunities (as shown by the significant growth of the so-called “orange economy”).

But this membership, however, has a particular meaning. In fact, it marks the start of the “Artistic and cultural interweavings” project which unites two regions (Molise and Puglia) and a territory (the Sannio) and which has the specific objective of enhancing this artistic and manufacturing knowledge, linked to the textile tradition and lace making, to transform them into new opportunities for entrepreneurial and employment development.

A project that tends to enhance/stimulate that protagonism of enterprising territories and communities (as defined by a Euricse study) and that is inspired, taking up the words of our President Mattarella, by that common vision that animates the 2030 Agenda, the paradigm of the Civil Economy and our Constitution.

It is a project path that sees the involvement of a qualified institutional, scientific, entrepreneurial and social partnership essential to the success of the project initiative.

To celebrate International Lace Day, on Sunday 23 June at 10.30 am, at the headquarters of the Circolo Arci F. Jovine (located in Guglionesi via Roma 9) a “short” meeting will be held in which we will recall, on the one hand, the meaning of the event, and, on the other hand, we will outline the program of initiatives that will be developed in the coming months.

We will therefore talk about the organization of “mini workshops” which, free of charge, will be held at the association’s headquarters (located within the suggestive “historic centre” of Guglionesi – via Roma 9), which will allow participants to learn the basic elements with which to create small “souvenir” artefacts.

We will also talk about the creation, within the association headquarters, of a “place” of territorial socio-economic animation and dissemination of the initiative with which to make the aims of the project known; of a “place” for narrating the project path to tell, in harmony with the aims of the “ReSet the trend – make fast fashion out of fashion” campaign (aimed at raising awareness/involving European citizens on the social and environmental damage produced by “fast fashion”), the unsustainability of the current development model (see Agenda 2030) through the unsustainability of the current fashion industry (referred to by the European Commission campaign).

Finally, we will try to talk about the far from marginal role of manufacturing mastery in the strategies adopted by the European Commission which are focused on the creation of fashion products: durable, recyclable, free of dangerous substances and respectful of social and environmental rights.
