Great sailing returns to Sanremo and does so with what could be, with good reason, the prospects that open up on the future of a fascinating and engaging sporting discipline.

The opportunity is provided by the stage of the Giro dell’Italia a Vela Nastro Rosa Tour which, after the arrival of the competing boats on Wednesday, will see the regattas take place again today and tomorrow. «A fundamental fact – underlines Beppe Zaoli, president of the Sanremo Yacht Club – is that the organization has chosen to stop in Sanremo, a sign of the great consideration in which our city is held in the world of high-level sailing».

The Giro, in its nine stages which will then end in Venice, involves ten international teams with over fifty athletes participating in multi-discipline sailing regattas. Competing in the water are in fact the Inshore/Waszp classes, with coastal races around the buoy, in contact with the public, Board/Wing Foil, for speed, acrobatics and a high level of spectacularity, and Offshore/Figaro 3, for sailing height. The results obtained in the various tests and in all the stages will then contribute to providing the final team ranking.

«It is an event that has existed for many years – adds Zaoli – and which makes this type of sailing known in all the sailing clubs of our country. The Giro brings with it an enthusiastic, lively and passionate youth, as well as all the Italian military sports groups, with boats that have great champions on board.”

In fact, those competing in the water are the emerging classes, those who are most loved by young people and who will leave a mark throughout the future history of sailing itself. «Classic sailing, as we understand it – specifies Zaoli – will never disappear. This is a new approach to sailing, a way to combine traditional sailing with a new sail. Even more than what happened in cross-country skiing, with alternating pace and skating pace: here we are talking about flying over the water. A completely new and highly spectacular way of sailing.”

And this spectacularity can be admired in Sanremo, even from the ground, today and tomorrow. In fact, the last coastal regattas involving all the classes present are scheduled from 11am today. From tomorrow, around 11am, the offshore boats will set sail for the test that will take them to La Maddalena, the next stage location.

In this context, right among the Figaro3, there is a boat that bears the colors of the Yc Sanremo itself. The team, coordinated by our partner Maximilian Kuester, is made up of nine athletes who will alternate in doubles in the 1400 miles of the various stages of the event. Maximilian Kuester, Davide Ortelli, Federica Monacelli, Carlo Macchi, Carlo Sessa, Enrico Tamanini, Giacomo Galimberti, Francesco Bianchi, Lorenzo De Felice will come on board.

A jewel within a jewel is the village which, built on the quay, is bringing the beauty of sailing “to land”. «It is a wonderful village – concludes President Zaoli – a real opportunity for the city. An impressive and high-level work has been done to build a village equal to that of the Festival.” —
