The Dauno Speleological Group (Foggia) is carrying out both historical and scientific research in the complex network of aqueducts present in the subsoil of Agrigento, long forgotten and dating back to the 5th century BC, and in particular in the hypogeum of Bonamorone which feeds the homonymous fountain . “We are starting to document the traces left by the tools used for the excavation with macro photographs and casts made on them and then subsequently compare them with those present on other hypogea, but in addition to this we have found clear fossils incorporated along the walls, and during these inspections, we were very surprised to also come across various engravings, made in more recent times, most likely by people who took care of its maintenance, such as a cross engraved with a date and other writings that need to be documented”, Natalino Soccio, one of the researchers of the speleological group, tells us that once the research work is completed, it will be collected and shown to the public, also on the occasion of Agrigento Capitale 2025. Given the water crisis in Agrigento, the group was also requested by the Prefecture and by the Municipality of Agrigento to try to understand if the aforementioned hypogeum could supply the city as well as get water to the fountain. “The flow rate of the water is not great, at most you can power the fountain”, Soccio said.
