“Greetings. I am Antonio ScagliolaPresident of Calabria Paralympic CommitteeI want to tell you what happened to me on June 15th when I went to visit the beautiful open-air museum MUSABA in Mammolain the province of Reggio Calabria.
The facts: having reached the entrance to the museum, after traveling along a dirt road and crossing a dilapidated bridge, my wife and I arrive at the museum car park. After leaving the car we followed the signs indicating the ticket office and found ourselves at the foot of a very steep climb made of uneven stones, therefore not easy to travel and about 200m long.
Once we completed the climb we arrived at the ticket office where, in a kind manner, a lady explained to us where we were and what there was to see. Thinking back to the route I just took, a normal question arose in my mind: “But can a disabled person in a wheelchair come to see the MUSEUM?”.
The lady politely replies: “ABSOLUTELY not! because the MUSEUM is totally INACCESSIBLE.”
The most serious thing is that behind him there was another lady, identified as the person who manages the foundation that owns the museum, and widow of the artist Nik Spadari, Hiske Maas, who as a solution suggested “PICK THE DISABLED PERSON IN YOUR ARMS AND HAVE THE VISIT”, repeating it a couple of times in front of other visitors, without showing a minimum of understanding or any interest in the situation presented.
Now to make a long story short I ask myself:
– why a museum that receives public subsidies is not in compliance with the LAW;
– why in a person in charge of culture, the cradle of civil society, there can still be discrimination and offenses against people;
– why should there still be mental and architectural barriers in a public place frequented by school groups?
I can’t imagine if some students couldn’t have the same rights as other classmates or had to be CARRIED IN THEIR ARMS.
Let’s do something about our wonderful land, it doesn’t deserve this.”
