Appointment with the great mountaineering in Sala Montanari in Varese, where Friday 21 June at 9pm will be projected the documentary “Italia K2”, in a restored version70 years after the victorious expedition led by Ardito Desio. At the end of the evening, ad free entrywill also be presented the exhibition “K2 an Italian company 1954-2024” hosted at the Castiglioni Museum.

The film, proposed by the CAI of Varese, tells the story of the Italian expedition that the July 31, 1954 reached the summit of K2 (8611 m). The images of the expedition were captured stage by stage by the Bolognese mountaineer and cameraman Mario Fantin (1921-1980), who created the “official film”. The documentary also testifies to the less epic and more concrete moments of the expedition: with wonder we follow the slow, titanic march towards the summit, first with the porters, then with the mountaineers alone.

The harshness of the places, the fatigue of the bodies at every single step, the dangers and the essentiality of the equipment of the time are accompanied by the pride of participating in an authentic undertaking. Freed from the nationalist rhetoric and high-sounding comments of the original film, the restored version, which makes the most of Fantin’s exceptional shots, allows us to relive the salient moments and emotions of the great expedition in a contemporary key.
