Le Vie della Lana: the documentary of transhumance in Molise through ancient sheep tracks

Isernia. The sheep tracks of Molise are becoming the protagonists of a new documentary intended for the national and international television market. The project, entitled “Le Vie della Lana”, produced by Kairostudio and directed by Daniele Di Domenico, focuses on the ancient transhumance routes that cross the Molise region.

Starting from Foggia and heading towards L’Aquila and the Gran Sasso, the film crew follows the route of the L’Aquila-Foggia sheep track and other royal sheep tracks. These ancient paths were used by shepherds for centuries, guiding millions of sheep from the summer pastures of the Apennines in Molise and Abruzzo to the winter pastures in the Tavoliere of Puglia. In 2019, UNESCO recognized these sheep tracks as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

The documentary aims to tell the complex practice of transhumance, a system of seasonal migrations that has shaped the culture and economy of the regions involved. Bruno Paura, associate professor at the University of Molise, underlines the ecological importance of sheep tracks as corridors that enrich local biodiversity. Michele Cianciullo, promoter of the “Cammina, Molise!” trekking, highlights the tourist potential of the sheep tracks, underlining the importance of their conservation and maintenance to preserve the unique landscape that they represent.

Molise, crossed by numerous historic sheep tracks, represents a cultural and naturalistic treasure to be valorised. The documentary “Le Vie della Lana” follows Kairostudio’s previous success with “I Giganti del Mare”, showing a continuous commitment to promoting sustainability and historical-cultural heritages through audiovisual means. Kairostudio, active since 2007 and known for its collaboration with Rai and other national and European bodies, confirms itself as a leader in the production of content that explores and promotes the richness of Italian traditions.
