Umbria ballots, the electoral campaign heats up: vitriolic attacks and challenge to the last vote

There will be five days of heated electoral campaign in the five Umbrian municipalities that will return to the polls next Sunday. The ballot, in fact, will have repercussions on the individual municipal councils of Perugia, Foligno, Bastia Umbra, Gubbio and Orvieto. Not only that: Monday’s results could open up a new scenario in view of the next regional elections. In recent days there has been no shortage of attacks, even vitriol, between the ten competitors. Having concluded the preliminary phase (only one in official form in Foligno) the attention of many candidates is now focused on the arrangements of future city assemblies. In Perugia there was a strong back and forth between Massimo Monni and Margherita Scoccia with the centre-right mayoral candidate replying to the statements of Perugia’s mayoral candidate Merita. “I have never proposed a role as deputy mayor to Mr. Monni,” Scoccia underlined. Reply rejected by Monni himself. “When we met there were other friends,” says Monni. Vitriolic jokes also took place in Foligno and Bastia Umbra. In the city of Quintana there is a challenge to the last vote between the very Catholic Mauro Masciotti (centre-left) and Stefano Zuccarini (centre-right). At stake are the votes of the other two candidates for mayor: Enrico Presilla of Alternative Popular and Moreno Finamonti of the civic list “La Voce di Foligno”. With the second officially associating himself with the centre-left candidate. In Foligno it is precisely the outgoing mayor’s party (Lega) that sets the fuse on fire by accusing Masciotti and his coalition of dividing “Foligno between good and bad”. Fiery climate in Bastia Umbra where the centre-left candidate Erigo Pecci brands the unofficial agreement between the outgoing mayor Paola Lungarotti and Catia Degli Esposti as an “agreement of power and positions made in Perugia bypassing the territory and the people who have committed themselves for the two candidates”. In Gubbio, however, the centre-left is licking its wounds after the disaster of the first round and is on the sidelines. The one who isn’t watching is Rocco Girlanda who tries to recover some electoral themes of the four mayoral candidates who came out in the first round. To gain the consensus of Alessia Tasso, Leonardo Nafissi, Gabriele Tognolini and Francesco Della Porta he jointly sent a letter in which he undertakes to integrate his administrative program with some points of the four defeated candidates. In these hours there are many councilor candidates who risk being left out of the city assemblies. Sometimes these are excellent names, real champions of preferences who flopped on 8 and 9 June. In Perugia the most sensational cases are those of Edi Cicchi, outgoing councilor of Progetto Perugia, who in the event of Ferdinandi’s success would remain outside Palazzo dei Priori. Another flop was the one recorded by Marko Hromis, the animator of a lively discussion within the Perugia PD for months, who even came eighth. In the event of Margherita Scoccia’s victory, the San Sisto dem exponent will remain outside the city council. Other sensational flops were those of councilor Gabriele Giottoli and former councilor Peppino Lomurno on the Forza Italia list, Emanuela Mori (Perugia Civica), Francesco Maria Perrotta (Pd).
