The large photovoltaic system built by Sidel in its Parma factory in via La Spezia has become fully operational.

The investment presented a year ago allows the site to cover 40% of its electricity needs and reduce its CO2 emissions by 871 tonnes/year, equal to that absorbed by 43,500 trees.

It is one of the largest corporate photovoltaic systems in Emilia-Romagna which, thanks to its five thousand solar panels, is capable of producing 2,900 MWh of electricity, equal to the annual consumption of over a thousand Parma families.

Sidel plans to invest around 5 million euros in Parma for the energy transition, accompanying the construction of the photovoltaic system with other important initiatives aimed at contributing to the achievement of the sustainability objectives that the company – world leader in the supply of packaging solutions of drinks, food and personal and household hygiene products in PET, cans, glass and other materials – was given for the three-year period 2022-2024.

“Our environmental commitment is at the center of all our activities. In fact, we make our contribution to protecting the environment by innovating and developing sustainable solutions to reduce CO2 emissions – he comments Francesca Bellucci, Sustainability director of Sidel Group –. Our decarbonisation strategy aims for a 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, i.e. those resulting from our operations and energy consumption, by 2030. This objective has already been achieved: in 2023, in fact, we reduced our emissions by 75% compared to 2019. The entry into full operation of the Parma photovoltaic plant allows us to take a further important step forward in achieving the goal of zero net emissions throughout our value chain by 2050”.

All Sidel production sites around the world, including the Parma site, are certified according to the ISO 14001 environmental management system. Thanks to this certification, Sidel has adopted a system that allows it to continuously reduce its environmental footprint on a global level. By integrating sustainability principles into its operations, the company aims to not only reduce its carbon footprint, but also improve the operational efficiency, innovation and competitiveness of the business.

“We are particularly proud to have put the plant into operation in its entirety by providing the plant with self-produced clean energy – he adds Riccardo Rosselli, VP Global Sites & Facility Management of Sidel Group and Site leader of the Parma site -. This is a very important step towards achieving our environmental sustainability objectives for the headquarters and the factory, also in line with the sustainability objectives that the city of Parma has set itself by 2030. I would like to thank all the Sidel collaborators who in Over the last year they have worked hard to turn an ambitious project into reality.”
