New commission from the Teatri Foundation and the Nicolini Conservatory of Piacenza, the opera Mother of the young composer from Piacenza Davide Tramontano makes its world premiere Friday 21 June at 8.30 pm at the Municipal Theatre, on the day that celebrates the Music Festival.
The appointment is part of the Music Media Festivalwhich explores today’s musical and theatrical languages with the use of new technologies and electronics, whose third edition is dedicated to Maurizio Pollini, a pioneer pianist of contemporary music who recently passed away.

At the Municipal Theatre, as the final event of the MusicMediale Festival, a new opera is scheduled for the third consecutive year, entrusted on this occasion to a young composer. Born in Piacenza in 2000, Tramontano is making his operatic debut after having already obtained important recognitions, including the Bruno Bettinelli Award and Second Prize to XXIX edition of International composition competition 2 August in Bologna, with Broken streams for large orchestra performed live on Rai. Published by Universal Edition in Vienna, his compositions are on tour in Europe and the United States.
On a libretto based on the play Riders to the sea (1904) by John Millington Synge, Mother will be proposed in the free adaptation edited by Tramontano himself: “When I was asked to compose an opera for the Teatro Municipale of Piacenza, the first concern was naturally the libretto. With Synge’s text it was love at first reading: an extraordinary literary modernity, a unique expressive and emotional potential. I immediately understood that it would be my opera – explains the composer – Starting from the Irish author’s tragedy, I created a libretto that was dramaturgically as faithful as possible to the original text, while modernizing and streamlining it. I decided to focus the story even more on family ties and premonitions, but also on pain and helplessness in the face of loss. The new title puts the real victim, the Mauryan mother, at the center – Motherprecisely”.
The one-act opera will be directed by Daniele Balleello driving theContemporary Ensemble of the Nicolini Conservatorydirected by Roberto Recchia. In the title role Caterina Meldolesian emerging soprano already appreciated on important stages, flanked by young singers from the Nicolini Conservatory of Piacenza: the soprano Corina Baranovschi (Cathleen), the mezzo-soprano Liu Ziyu (Nora), the baritones Jing Mingyu (Bartley) e Yin Yanhang (Colum). The work will make use of electronics Of Francesco Altilio and the customs of Michele Gianninistudent of the Academy of Fine Arts of Bari.
The story takes place in a remote Irish village, where Maurya’s daughters, Nora and Cathleen, receive the tragic news that a body – probably that of their brother Michael – has been found on the shores of Donegal. Meanwhile, their last living brother, Bartley, is determined to leave for the Galway Fair to sell the horses, despite Maurya’s concern about the dangerous sea winds, thus starting a series of events that will lead to his mother to face a long journey.
“The composition of Mother it is the result of years of meticulous and passionate work; every detail of the score has been taken care of to try to immerse the audience in the delicate family balances of this intense and engaging story – declares Tramontano – It is a dense score, in which on a dramaturgical and musical level the singing intertwines with the orchestra, opening up in glimpses lyrical and harsh sounds, thanks to which music echoes relational complexities”.
