Foligno Celebrates the 80th Anniversary of its Liberation

Foligno Celebrates its 80th anniversary – Today, Foligno celebrated the 80th anniversary of its liberation with a solemn ceremony in Piazza Don Minzoni. The National Army Selection and Recruitment Center paid homage to the city with a guard of honour.

The ceremony began with the laying of a laurel wreath at the memorial monument. Lorenzo Schiarea, President of the City Council of Foligno, underlined the importance of this day, 16 June 1944, as a symbolic moment in which the city found its freedom and began a new chapter of hope and rebirth.

After four years of exhausting war and 36 allied bombings, the day of liberation from the Nazi-fascist regime has finally arrived. Schiarea recalled the courage and sacrifice of those who fought to guarantee a better future for subsequent generations.

The mayor of Foligno, Stefano Zuccarini, then took the floor, recalling that distant 16 June 1944. On that day, the allied troops, with the help of the partisan forces, fought against the retreating Germans to avoid the destruction of the Ponte di Bring Florence to the Topino, already mined to be blown up.

Zuccarini underlined the importance of keeping the memory of that day alive, now 80 years ago. He recalled how Piazza Don Minzoni, once home to a seventeenth-century palace destroyed by an Allied bomb, is now a nerve center of the famous ‘Folignate nightlife’.

Concluding his speech, Zuccarini underlined the need for hope and trust in the future, especially at a time when war is on Europe’s borders and ongoing conflicts around the world are impacting everyone’s lives. He urged us to learn from the mistakes of the past to build a better future.
