Important religious moment this morning, June 16, for the Muslim community of Savona: the Eid al-Adha “Festival of Sacrifice” was celebrated on the lawn of the Bacigalupo stadium.

Typically the Eid al-Adha prayer was done at the Trenches Gym; this year, the association of the Islamic Community of Savona, through the Municipality, asked the managers of Bacigalupo to be able to do it on the stadium lawn, probably for reasons of space.

“We were asked through the Municipality – explains Bertrand Viti of Amatori Calcio Savona who manages the stadium – The stadium belongs to the city and it seemed normal to open it to the prayers of this community. Everything was done regularly and with the due checks and authorizations”.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice”, is a major Islamic holiday. It is celebrated annually on the tenth day of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah, coinciding with the completion of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj).

This holiday commemorates the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ishmael (Isaac in Jewish and Christian tradition) as an act of obedience to God. However, before Ibrahim could make the sacrifice, God provided him with a ram to sacrifice to his place.
