Assuero Pieraccini passed away during the night at the age of 93. A reference figure of the Giostra del Saracino of the last seventy years, he can be considered one of the founding fathers of the Giostra of the modern era.
Neighborhood member of Porta Santo Spirito, he entered the yellow-blue district after the war, dressing as a walk-on for the first time in 1949.
Multi-victorious captain and rector, he held the position of captain from 1957 to 1966, winning four golden lances and won the same number as rector, whose clothes he wore continuously for twenty years, from 1974 to 1993.
An authoritative personality, loved and respected by all four districts, he held the role of director coordinator for ten years, from 2003 to 2012 and subsequently was magistrate of the Giostra del Saracino.
He was also the founder and president of the Coordination Committee for the Giostra del Saracino created in 1983 on his initiative to encourage the remake of the costumes of the Giostra and verify the historical coherence of the various aspects linked to the event.
“The Giostra del Saracino is a journey made of small steps aiming for excellence”, he loved to repeat.
A figure esteemed by the whole city not only for his jousting roles, he was a director of the Banca Popolare dell’Etruria e del Lazio, covering roles of the utmost importance within the Arezzo banking institution. Member of Panathlon Arezzo, he was president of the local club and governor for Central Italy.
An authoritative guide also for the new generations, Pieraccini leaves a profound moral legacy to the entire city.

The chapel of rest has been set up in the Porta Santo Spirito District Museum and will be open today and tomorrow for the whole day (from 9.00 to 20.00). The funeral funeral will take place in the Cathedral on Tuesday 18 June at 3.00 pm in the presence of the entire jousting world who will pay homage to one of the greatest representatives of the Giostra del Saracino.
