ROVIGO – The staff of the Municipality’s electoral office will spend a quiet morning today, then at 12 they will be able to go home, because no one will show up to sign alliances with the two challengers to the ballot next Sunday and Monday. What was said since the outcome of the first round has been confirmed. The shy contacts made by Valeria Citizen and Edoardo Gaffeo they did not lead to any innovations or even to agreements on official voting instructions, which in any case arrive autonomously.
The most popular in this sense appeared to be Federico Frigato, who met both of them in 24 hours, but everything ended there, even if yesterday there were rumors of an underground agreement with Cittadin. With the person concerned replying that there was indeed “a meeting, but no comparisons are made and Frigato will be the one to evaluate him”. The latter explains that “there is nothing at stake, if I supported someone I would say so”. What if they were word-of-mouth voting indications? «Not even, even if they asked me for support from Cittadin, but I saw that there is a world of people behind Cittadin who move and it doesn’t seem free to me. I didn’t even understand the coalition’s city proposal.”
As for Gaffeo? «I had the impression that someone in his group wanted to try an understanding, but that he wasn’t very interested. With the list we also considered whether to support him, given that in the distribution of seats we would have had four councilors and with Cittadin only one, but we decided not to. The list is transversal and our voters are free to vote as they wish.”
THE PD CASE
Also on the Gaffeo front, the hypothesis of a singular agreement with the Democratic Party was circulating behind the scenes. An alliance would have changed the number of party councilors in the event of Gaffeo’s victory, but after years of clashes and mutual accusations and refusals, a drama would have appeared: bringing down a municipality and getting back together out of interest, with the doubt of a future of new tensions.
Who knows if this motivated the decision, the fact is that the matter was dropped at the city club meeting on Friday evening, but no one in the party is speaking, postponing any clarification until a press conference tomorrow. Gaffeo himself confirms that «let’s not make comparisons, let’s start again with the electoral campaign among the people. I was amazed, however, that no centre-right party called the candidate responsible for a public debate, while the proposal to do so for Rai 3 was accepted.”
Then come two official positions of other losers. The first is from Palmiro Tosini, who perhaps will also have clarifications with the Democratic Party on this campaign, and will vote for Gaffeo. «I have no party membership and I had no problem confronting anyone. I am ready to support good ideas even if they are from the centre-right, but I feel at ease in the centre-left, indeed all the way with the left where my experience and my history are. It is no coincidence that my name is Palmiro, my father was the first and last secretary of the PCI of Bosaro. On a personal level, I will support and ask to support in the run-off whoever is closest to my world (Gaffeo, ed.), I don’t mind Valeria (Cittadin, ed.) who I respect a lot.”
Everyone is free from Cambia Rovigo, Ezio Conchi’s list, which is centre-right. The list met yesterday morning and expressed “thanks for all the voters who wanted to trust us, extended to those who did their utmost in the electoral campaign”, as in the run-off Conchi explains that “we believe it is worth highlighting that the civic list Cambia Rovigo is inspired by the values of liberal-popular and European democracy. For the runoff we leave total freedom to vote. Where present in the city council we will remain faithful to the commitments made in the electoral campaign, supporting from time to time those who will be the bearers and guarantors of the values and indications expressed in our program which is and remains our only bond”.
