The access contribution to Venice, an experimental measure launched in 2019 and updated in 2021, aims to better manage tourist flows and preserve the city

VENICE – Twentieth day of the entrance fee to Venice, an experimental regulation launched with the 2019 budget law and updated in 2021. This system aims to better manage tourist flows and discourage daily tourism in certain periods, to protect the delicacy and the uniqueness of the city.

Latest data

Yesterday 15 June, 14,698 paying people were registered. The codes issued for exempt guests of accommodation facilities amount to just over 41,500, who do not have to pay as they already pay the tourist tax. This number includes various categories: arrivals, accommodations and departures. Those exempt because they reside in Veneto or in the metropolitan city are 6,191. Confirmed in the overall numbers, with vouchers valid until 14 July, there are students (17,065), workers (22,833), property owners who pay the IMU or holders of rental contracts without residence in the ancient city (7,840), and their relatives (2,746). There were 4,712 requests for exemption “inviting acquaintances” and 1,772 for other reasons.

Controls and Results

The checks verified a total of 15,166 QR-codes, without detecting any particular critical issues. The entry fee will resume tomorrow, Sunday 16 June, and on 22, 23, 29, 30 June; 6, 7, 13 and 14 July 2024, always from 8.30am to 4pm.

Mayor’s statement

As the mayor of Venice underlined: “The objective of the access fee is to make the city livable for residents, workers, students and tourists. Most people understood that we want to protect the city. It is a measure that can be improved, but so far it has not caused any particular disadvantages. We recognize the problems and difficulties, but we are trying to overcome them. One step at a time we will make it.”

Provisions for Tomorrow

Physical gates will also be active today at the main access points to the city, with priority gates for residents and workers. The stewards will check the visitors’ QR-code and will assist those who do not have one to download the entry ticket and pay the fee on site. Anyone who does not have the access fee will be fined by the inspectors who will carry out random checks.

Approximately 75 steward informants will be deployed every day in 16 areas; approximately 40 steward verifiers and 35 inspectors in approximately 15 main control points, such as the Railway area, P.le Roma and San Zaccaria. There are 70 information totems at the access points of the city, as well as Chioggia and Punta Sabbioni.
