He passed away on Saturday evening, June 15th, Ovidio Gobbo, historic innkeeper from Treviso, for 37 years manager of the Osteria Dalla Gigiain the heart of the historic center of Treviso.
Together with Sandro Valiera he had managed the tavern in Via Barberia for 37 years. The adventure that began in 1982 ended in 2019 with the transition to new management, of which Ovidio remained very fond.
Despite the illness that had struck him, in fact, the innkeeper willingly paid a visit to what had been his second home for almost four decades.
There is no Treviso who has not at least once allowed himself a break with cedar but above all with the mozze della Gigia, the legendary mozzarella in carrozza stuffed with cooked ham or anchovies. And then the beers, the sandwiches, all seasoned with the kind and friendly smile of Ovidio and Sandro.
Ovid’s way of doing calculations, strictly in mind and out loud, was also famous. He quickly stated the price of each order placed and then stated in a stentorian manner how much there was to pay.
The news spread around the city in no time. The collective condolences were unanimous, summed up in the words of Mayor Mario Conte: «This is news that saddens me greatly. With Ovid a piece of our history goes away. At the Osteria Dalla Gigia in Via Barberia, alongside Sandro Valiera, he pampered thousands of people from Treviso and beyond, becoming an institution and a symbol of “Trevigianity”, that way of hosting and involving which is characteristic of our community”, said Conte .
«Ovidio was a discreet and kind man who managed, with his manners, courtesy and professionalism, but above all his love for his profession, for the customer and for quality, to promote our city as an experience to live , making the innkeeper a reference and a friend. I offer my deepest condolences to his family, friends and those who loved him.”
