GEA 2024 – The MArRC offers a weekend dedicated to archaeology

After the great success of the event CULTURE TRAVELS ON THE SEA, from Magna Graecia to the world 4.0 which was held on Sunday 9 June in Piazza Paolo Orsi of the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria, another engaging weekend is planned in the rooms of Palazzo Piacentini .

In fact, from 14 to 16 June, the MArRC is offering a rich program to celebrate the 2024 edition of the European Archeology Days.

We start on Friday 14th at 5.30pm in the Conference Room with the conference entitled “Challenges of Preventive Archaeology: between protection and experiences in the territory”.

The event will open with institutional greetings from the director of the MArRC Fabrizio Sudano and will be moderated by Dr. Alessia Mancuso (archaeologist official of the MArRC).

The objective of the conference is to offer an Italian overview, with a focus on our territory, of the concept of Preventive Archeology from a methodological, regulatory and implementation point of view.

Professionals who work daily in the sector, with many years of experience in the field of archaeological research, will speak on the topic, such as prof. Sara Marino (professor of Preventive Archeology at the “La Sapienza” University of Rome), Dr. Michele Mazza (archaeologist official of SABAP of Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia) and Dr. Simona Accardo (administrator of Aspasia Archeoservice srl).

In these three days of celebration of archaeological research and heritage, the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria has also thought of the youngest visitors.

Children will be able to participate on June 15th at 4.30 pm in the educational activity “Hades and Persephone: words and images from the myth”.

It will be a path that involves the strengthening and development of the love for reading and archeology through the telling of the myth.

The young visitors, starting from reading the text and continuing with the vision of ancient volumes preserved in our library, will finally be able to admire the finds relating to the myth of Hades and Persephone exhibited in our museum.

The meeting will last approximately an hour and a half and will be aimed at children aged between 6 and 11 years accompanied by at least one adult who will be able to access the museum by paying the usual ticket.

The activity, supervised by Drs Maria Saraceno and Maria Raneri, archaeological officials of the MArRC, will have a limited number of places and with obligatory reservations for a maximum of 12 children. For reservations and information on the initiative, the email address [email protected] will be available.

“Journey to the necropolises of Calabria from Prehistory to the Hellenistic age”.

To conclude, on Sunday 16 June, on the occasion of the third and final day of the GEA, the Museum offers visitors a journey through the exhibition rooms entitled “Journey to the necropolises of Calabria: from Prehistory to the Hellenistic age” to discover widespread funerary practices in the territory of present-day Calabria, with a focus on the necropolises of Reggio and its territory.

There are two shifts lasting approximately one hour: the first at 5.00 pm and the second at 6.30 pm, with an appointment in Piazza Paolo Orsi, for a maximum number of 15 participants per shift.

The guided tours will be led by Dr. Anna Romeo, archaeological officer of the MArRC.
