The Cathariniana Library of Pisa dates back to the 13th century and owes its name to the fact that it was part of the convent of Santa Caterina di Alessandria, where today there are the classrooms of the Santa Caterina Parificated School Institute.

The upper floor of the former convent includes an ancient section consisting of 250 manuscripts, 98 incunabulaover a million Cinquecentine and around 25,000 volumes, the history and art history section hosts over a thousand volumes and the contemporary section includes around 25,000, as well as many periodicals.

“Today we are participating in the presentation of the recovery project of the former Lux cinema theater, which will become the seat of the Cateriniana Library – explains the engineer Stefano Carani, representative of the Pisa Foundation – the recovery has considerable importance both from a historical architectural profile and, even more so, from a biblio-archival one. The location of the Library in the new location will allow its valorisation, recognizing its importance and making it usable by everyone in safe conditions and above all guaranteeing the book heritage a suitable environment for its conservation and consultation”.
