Swine fever. Carra (Pd): 18 June at the Coldiretti garrison under Palazzo Lombardia

MANTOVA The regional councilor of the Democratic Party Marco Carra, on June 18th, at 9 am, will participate in the demonstration organized by Coldiretti under Palazzo Lombardia to ask for the containment of wild boars. “For months – attacks the Dem councilor – we have been asking the Region to develop an extraordinary regional plan for the containment of wild boars provided for by law 157/1992, but until today the Fontana council has remained inert and completely non-compliant. The spread of swine fever has been lightly underestimated. This is despite the need long reported by many to implement effective actions and tools to deal with it. For our part, we have been denouncing the Lombardy Region’s extreme delay in all the prevention measures necessary to stop the spread of the virus since June 2023. From the first case of swine fever in Ovada, in January 2022, all prevention measures should have been implemented for companies in the sector. Instead, the Lombardy Region intervened insufficiently and extremely late, so much so that the first tender for companies to implement the prevention measures is dated June 2023, and limited to some areas of the Pavia area already deeply affected, and the second tender, open to all companies, it is from the beginning of 2024 and will only be concluded at the end of this year. The national commissioner had foreseen a GOT (territorial operational group) for each province, but in Lombardy they had first been reduced to one for the entire region and now brought back to one per district, while the districts have not yet been defined. To date we still don’t even have certain data on killings and positive and negative findings of wild boars.”

“The only measure passed – adds Carra, group leader in the Agriculture Commission – is the plan for the management, control and eradication of African swine fever (ASF), adopted by the council on 30 April, which however must be applied as quickly as possible , but it is still not enough: it focuses on eradicating wild boars in the areas already affected by the virus today (Pavia and Lodi) but leaves the provinces of Cremona, Mantua and Brescia uncovered. But this is not the way to go: we must prevent contagion, not chase it.”

“Today – concludes the dem councilor – Fontana is launching a new ordinance in an unforgivable and extreme delay, but it is difficult to believe that it can be a concrete response to the problem”.
