Following investigations carried out by the soldiers of the Carabinieri Forestry Unit of Rimini and the Port Authority – Coast Guard of Rimini, a warehouse used as an uncontrolled waste storage was identified.

As part of joint controls carried out by the Forestry Carabinieri and the Coast Guard regarding environmental protection and the waste cycle, illicit waste management was identified, carried out through the uncontrolled storage of a significant quantity of obsolete electronic equipment (WEEE ), disused furniture and end-of-life tyres, equal to approximately 500 cubic metres, which were stowed inside a warehouse of approximately 3,200 square meters located in the Municipality of Rimini, probably for the purpose of their illicit shipment to foreign countries.

The judicial police investigations made it possible to trace the alleged perpetrator of the crime, who was referred to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Rimini for the crimes foreseen and punished by the art. 256 c. 1 and 259 of Legislative Decree 152/2006, i.e. the illicit management of waste and waste trafficking.

The activity described is part of the actions carried out daily by the Forestry Carabinieri and the Coast Guard in defense of the environment in its various components of soil, water, air and biodiversity. In this regard, it seems useful to remember that the law provides for imprisonment from three months to one year or a fine from 2600.00 euros to 26000.00 euros for anyone carrying out collection, transport, recovery, disposal, trading and intermediation of waste in the absence of the required authorisation, registration or communication if it concerns non-hazardous waste, while in the case of dangerous waste (as for example some categories of WEEE may be) the penalty is more serious and becomes arrest from six months to two years and a fine from 2600.00 euros to 26000.00 euros.

Furthermore, anyone who carries out a shipment of waste in breach of the legal requirements and EU regulations incurs the crime of “waste trafficking”. This crime is punishable by a fine ranging from 1550.00 euros to 26000.00 euros and imprisonment for up to two years.

Please note that the investigations are ongoing and that the suspects are presumed innocent until a definitive finding of guilt with an irrevocable sentence of conviction at the end of the criminal proceedings.
