Veterinary medicine between predation and management of injured wild animals

The residential seminar entitled Veterinary medicine between predation and management of injured wild animals it will take place on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 June 2024, in Grande Charrière, 66, Saint-Christophe (AO), in the headquarters of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Department of the Autonomous Region of Valle d’Aosta.

It is organized by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Piedmont, Ligura and Valle d’Aosta and by the National Reference Center for Wild Animal Diseases.

The first day, Tuesday 18 June 2024, will begin at 10 am with the registration of participants, followed at 10.30 by greetings and the introduction to the proceedings.

At 11.00, Riccardo Orusa (director of the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d’Aosta) will provide introductory notes on the problem of damage from predation and the management of injured wild animals. At 11.30, Sabatino Troisi will introduce the topic of telenarcosis.

After the lunch break, at 2.30 pm, the seminar will resume with Sandra Ganio who will talk about the transport of wild animals. At 3.00 pm, Liliana Reghenzani will discuss the use of molecular dogs for the protection of emerging veterinary health problems, such as African swine fever. At 3.30 pm, Sabatino Troisi will address the topic of the presence of the wolf in peri-urban and urban areas. Luigi Mastrogiuseppe will close the day with a speech on the forensic inspection to ascertain damage from predation from 4.15pm.

The second day, Wednesday 19 June 2024, will begin at 10.30 with the presentation of the methodologies and practices on injured wild animals by CRAS, with Christian Chioso who will present the experience of the Wild Animal Recovery Center of the Aosta Valley. Liliana Reghenzani will follow at 11.00 with a practical demonstration of Hali, the molecular dog in action. The seminar will resume with Cristina Marchetti who will present cases of forensic pathology at 2.30 pm. At 3.00 pm, Luigi Mastrogiuseppe will discuss the assessment of damage from predation, with practical examples of inspections for predation and the question of the presence or absence of big cats in Italy.

The day will end with a round table, from 4.30pm to 6.00pm, on the management of predators between conservation and protection of related anthropic activities. Participants will be Luca Rossi of the University of Turin, Giancarlo Ruffo of the University of Milan, Bruno Bassano of the Gran Paradiso National Park, Andrea Baldi of the Carabinieri Forestali Corps of the Piedmont Region, Alessandro Bettosi of the Carabinieri Forestali Corps of the Rome Command, Giancarlo Annovazzi of the Forestry Corps of the Valle D’Aosta, representatives of trade associations and protectionist associations.

The seminar aims to provide updated information on the importance of veterinary medicine in determining predation by canids and large predators and in the management of injured or captured wildlife. It will also be an opportunity for debate on the impact of predation on livestock and the correct methodologies to use on injured wild animals.
