CATANIA – A ‘Caretta caretta’ sea turtle was found dead by some swimmers on the shore of the Plaia beach in Cataniain front of the beach reserved for the Air Force.

The discovery dates back to a few days ago. The FreeGreen association announced this, adding that at first glance it would seem that the reptile had not stuck any hooks in its mouth and may have died from being run over by a vessel or from a rescue operation which took place too late compared to the stranding, which perhaps occurred overnight.

“The turtle in question – states the president of the Association Alfio Lisi – was taken by the Port Authority thanks to the request of the bathers and probably, as usual for a protected species, transported to the Prophylactic Institute of Catania to verify the reason for death”.

“For years – concludes Lisi – there has been, according to official statistics, an interminable death of turtles of this rare species found beached on the Sicilian coasts. The main threat is certainly fishing: nets and hooks, but also the pollution of the waters with both chemical and plastic substances, which play a fundamental role, as well as the massive presence of man on the sandy coasts which easily leads to the devastation of nests”.
