The union comments on the electoral result: «Only 6 female mayors in the 52 Lucanian municipalities voting, the glass ceiling resists»
In the last administrative elections, voting was held in 52 of the 131 Lucanian municipalities: 42 in the province of Potenza, of which only one city, Potenza, with more than 15 thousand inhabitants and 10 in the province of Matera. The women candidates for the office of mayor were 16 out of 42 in the municipalities of Potenza (38.0%) with 5 elected in Anzi, Chiaromonte, Picerno, Rapone and San Chirico Nuovo, while of the 3 candidates out of 10 in the municipalities of Matera (33 .0%), there is only one elected candidate in Garaguso” state the Women’s Coordination of the CISL Basilicata as part of the permanent campaign for gender equality #iolottotuttolanno. «In total, 6 women mayors were elected out of 52 municipalities voting, equal to 11.5% of the total number of elected mayors, a figure that confirms the theory of the glass ceiling, that is, that set of obstacles that become real own invisible and impenetrable barriers, hence the metaphor of the glass, which stand between managerial roles and women, preventing the latter from reaching the top in various working, institutional and representative fields, regardless of the results obtained and their merits » continues the Women’s Coordination. «Moreover, the WeWorld 2023 report also classified Basilicata as a region hostile to women, with a very high female exclusion index, indeed the highest in Italy, which is greatly affected by the low presence of Lucanian women in institutions.
