“Public greenery comes first”

by Claudio Roselli

“There will be 23 new trees that will be placed in Viale Vittorio Veneto. When the end of the works in the area allows it and when nature also allows it, which provides precise times for planting trees. But they will be there, without ifs or buts Just as the planting of trees will take place in various areas of the city.” Words from Fabrizio Innocenti, mayor, who clears away the controversies that have flared up on social media: “As mayor I care about public green areas and those who know me know this, but there are situations that must be faced with institutional courage, also with respect to administrative management precedents that preferred to postpone the necessary decisions. Those plants were at high risk of falling and dangerous for public safety: this was confirmed by multiple written and detailed reports from technicians contacted and appointed”.

In fact, the photos of the trunks and above all of the state in which the inside of them was found left no room for misunderstandings and also the plant that fell along the avenue in May 2022, although fortunately not causing damage to either people or things, it had been a clear warning sign. “The mere thought that the Municipality proceeded with the felling of plants in Viale Vittorio Veneto without due precautions and without the necessary authorizations – states the councilor delegated for the environment, Alessandro Bandini – is an assertion contrary to logic and good faith. The fellings carried out are the consequence of technical assessments carried out by several companies that we consulted on the subject, so even with the green light from the Superintendency we moved in this direction, by virtue of the priority objective of safety and protection of people and things” .

A note also on the maintenance carried out in viale Fatti and via Machiavelli. “Contrary to those who talk inappropriately about pollarding – explains councilor Riccardo Marzi – we have developed completely different intervention techniques, namely the mowing pruning of the largest, but absolutely not pollarded, branches. We have therefore adopted a different technique, carrying out a less drastic pruning of the foliage, with the so-called return or nodal cut, the critical issues manifested in relation to the road clutter of Viale Fatti due to the growth at the base of the stems were promptly overcome by cutting the excess vegetation”.
