zero CO2 emissions by 2027

1

The zero CO2 emissions objective (scope 1 and scope 2) by 2027 is ambitious and will be achieved through a plan of targeted actions and checks on the effectiveness of the planned measures. The first important step was completed with the entry into operation, already at the end of last March, of a new photovoltaic system with 3,143 kW of installed power integrated with batteries of 600 kW of power for the accumulation and reuse of the renewable energy produced , and with the replacement – last May – of the airport’s operational vehicles with new electric vehicles.

The complete decarbonisation of the regional airport will take place by 2027 through the elimination of direct and indirect CO2 emission sources produced and referable to the airport manager (scope 1 and scope 2) and with the simultaneous production and use of renewable energy, replacing the sources fossils, from the new photovoltaic system in operation. To achieve complete decarbonisation, in addition to the new photovoltaic system integrated with batteries and the replacement of operational vehicles with electric ones, Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport has also planned within the Four-Year Intervention Plan 2024-2027 approved by the National Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC ) investments to reduce the energy dispersion of the airport, installation of new Air Handling Units and new heat pumps which will improve the energy efficiency of the airport by significantly reducing consumption.

Friuli Venezia Giulia Region supported the construction of the new photovoltaic system as part of the project Noemix, which involves the progressive replacement of regional public administration service cars with electric cars. Consumption of the regional car fleet Noemix they will be balanced with the production and injection into the grid of energy produced by photovoltaics at the airport. The excess energy not self-consumed by the airport is then transferred to the grid to follow up on the project forecasts Noemix as foreseen by the EU Horizon 2020 programme. In this context, the Environment Department of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region has arranged co-financing of 3.5 million euros for the construction of the photovoltaic system at the airport.

Thanks to the synergy with the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the municipal administration of Ronchi dei Legionari, Trieste Airport will cover its entire energy requirement from last April to next October with the new photovoltaic system integrated with batteries.

The system is built on two distinct areas: one on the roof of the “multi-storey car park” building of the Trieste Airport intermodal hub and the second in the airside in “laying on the ground” mode.

At the end of May, Trieste Airport also completed the purchase and commissioning of new electric vehicles for handling services. Trieste Airport was awarded the public tender established by the National Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) which allocated a loan of 2,735,072 million euros integrated with 911,691 euros in self-financing by Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport SpA

29 new electric vehicles were acquired and put into operation, used at the airport to provide services to parked aircraft, from loading and unloading of goods and baggage, to the embarkation and disembarkation of passengers and crews.

The green turning point at Trieste airport is a further step in the process of reconciling air transport with the environment which aims to eliminate CO emissions2in line with the European orientation” – observe the President of ENAC Pierluigi Di Palma – “Thanks to the synergistic commitment between ENAC, the FVG Autonomous Region and Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport, the de-carbonisation of the Trieste airport is becoming a tangible reality with the combination of photovoltaics and the use of electric vehicles for the operation of the stopover. ENAC continues to invest concretely in sustainability, providing its technical, regulatory and visionary contribution to an aerospace sector increasingly projected towards the future, in which environmental protection, i.e. of our planet, must become the paradigm of a global turning point”.

The President of the Region Massimiliano Fedriga highlights that “the photovoltaic system of Trieste Airport, precisely because of its peculiarities in terms of size and energy power, is currently the most important in Italy in the airport sector, placing the regional airport at the forefront with national leadership in renewable energy. It is also the largest photovoltaic system in the region which already ensures 75 percent of the airport’s needs, as well as benefiting the city community. Overall – added Fedriga – the intervention is worth around six million euros. The project, co-financed by the Region for an amount of 3.5 million, aims to use renewable sources to produce electricity and thus reduce the airport’s environmental impact. On this front, the objective is to move forward and reach even higher levels of energy self-sufficiency. Furthermore – the governor highlighted – Ronchi dei Legionari airport was recently chosen as the location for the construction of refueling stations for electric cars, demonstrating the growing attention towards environmental sustainability within an overall strategy of the Region in the context of the green transition ”.

LRegional Councilor for Environmental Protection, Energy and Sustainable Development, Fabio Scoccimarro: “With the NOEMIX project, Friuli Venezia Giulia is a candidate to be the first region in which a significant share of the company vehicles of Municipalities, Health Authorities, Regions and Public Bodies in general will be replaced by electric vehicles. By aggregating the needs of different public administrations, we will move from the current model for purchasing cars to a new one, centered on a “smart” electric mobility service, more efficient, safe and productive.

In addition to the rental of more than five hundred electric vehicles which will increase over the years and a PA mobility management and optimization system, thanks to NOEMIX approximately two hundred charging infrastructures will be installed in various places in our territory. The agreement stipulated between the Region and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport also fits into this context which, on the one hand, supports the construction of one of the largest photovoltaic systems in Italy affecting this specific sector. On the other hand, the agreement between the parties will guarantee the networking of the renewable energy produced in excess – equal to approximately 1 GWh per year – green energy equivalent to covering the estimated consumption for the entire fleet of electric vehicles involved in the project. These are important numbers that underline the relevance of this plant in the context of the energy policy pursued in the project but also the collaboration between the Region and the Airport.

We therefore welcome the initiative presented today to which the Region has contributed with interest, which allows us to get closer to one of the ambitious objectives on which the regional body operates for a greener territory free of carbon emissions, thanks to investments in energy transition, in renewable energy, but at the same time connected to the world and competitive”.

The Friuli Venezia Giulia airport aims to significantly and constantly increase international air connections and domestic flight frequencies. This development of connections will go in parallel with the achievement of zero CO emissions by 20272 produced by the airport manager” – he claims the CEO of Trieste Airport Marco Consalvo – “With the new photovoltaic system, already in operation since the end of March, integrated with energy storage batteries and the new totally electric airport vehicles, we have achieved an important and consistent objective in the airport’s de-carbonization process. Objective made possible thanks to the constant coordination and support of ENAC and the Region. The primary and distinctive asset of Friuli Venezia Giulia is its almost uncontaminated natural heritage, the challenge – even for a transport infrastructure like our airport – is to preserve the territory while making it increasingly accessible”.
