“In Italy the wind sector is rather fluctuating. In fact, we are witnessing an alternation of slowdowns and growth trends. Terna data relating to 2023, however, highlight a significant growth in the sector: going from approximately 9MW of wind power placed on the grid in the first quarter of 2022 to approximately 145 MW in the first quarter of 2023. 2023, in general, marked the record of new activations from renewable sources The biggest obstacle to the construction of new plants lies in the authorization processes that must combine energy transition and landscape protection. It is therefore essential to implement adequate support tools for new energy planning, aimed at achieving the decarbonisation objectives”. This was said by the councilor for the Environment, Energy and Territory of the Basilicata region, Cosimo Latronico, speaking at the “Green Med Expo & Symposium”, hosted by the Mostra d’Oltremare spaces in Naples. “With this in mind, two regulatory devices of fundamental importance for the sector are being approved: the Eligible Areas decree which, in implementation of the provisions of Legislative Decree 199/2021, has the aim of identifying the division between Regions and Provinces autonomous of the national objective for 2030 and establish homogeneous criteria for the identification of areas suitable and unsuitable for the installation of renewable energy systems; the consolidated text for the regulatory simplification of procedures concerning the production of energy from renewable sources.

Returning to the topic of wind power, the distribution of plants across the national territory is not at all homogeneous. Six southern regions generate the greatest quantities of energy from wind: Puglia, Campania, Calabria, Basilicata, Sicily and Sardinia, where almost all the wind farms are installed”. In Basilicata, Latronico explained, “at present there are around 1,500 wind farms, for a total power of 1,500 MW, with a production of around 2,800 Gwh/year. More than 80% of the plants are in the power range between 20kW and 200kW, while there are just under 50 wind farms with a power equal to or greater than 10MW. Also for Basilicata in 2023 there was a significant increase in the wind sector: in the year around 30 new plants were authorized for a power of around 500MW, equal to almost 60% of the total power from RES plants authorized in the same year , with a significant increase compared to 2022 data. The overall regional energy picture, with reference to the electricity sector, in terms of generation from renewable sources highlights a production of renewable energy equal to approximately 3,600 Gwh/year” concluded the regional councilor .
