Regarding the exclusion of the Superintendence’s request to start the procedure for the declaration of the restriction of cultural interest for Piazza Umberto I, the Committee of the Historic Center of Crotone has launched an appeal to the superintendent, Dr. Stefania Argenti, to start an ad hoc procedure to protect both Piazza Umberto I and the Liceo Classico Pitagora. The objective is to safeguard what remains of the historic school complex and keep the interest of citizens and institutions high.

In recent days, various associations and citizens have expressed the reasons for the need to bind Piazza Umberto I. The Committee, in addition to supporting these reasons, wanted to draw attention to the daily problems that the square experiences, proposing concrete solutions for improvement.

The gardens’ historic fountain is often vandalized and turned into a waste dump. The Committee proposes the restoration of the uprooted benches, the resowing of the lawns and the adoption of the green area by citizens, promoting activities to safeguard and maintain the decorum. Furthermore, they suggest naming the fountain through a competition of ideas to increase its symbolic value.

The Committee appeals to citizens to keep the square clean and decent, avoiding leaving waste and collecting dog waste. It is also asked to avoid wild parking, in particular parking in triple rows, which defaces the appearance of the square.

Among the Committee’s proposals is the adoption, through targeted initiatives, of the aedicules of the Madonna di Capocolonna and San Giuseppe, as well as the monument to the fallen. They propose to start a fundraiser for the protection of these monuments, which risk suffering irreparable damage due to bad weather and surrounding environmental conditions, such as tree resin.

Lastly, the Committee expresses the hope of seeing Piazza Umberto I alive in all its aspects. He hopes that the buildings of the Hotel Capital and the former Starbene can regain the glories of the past, enriching the heritage of a square deeply felt in the heart of the Crotone people. The invitation is addressed to everyone: institutions, citizens and associations, to join in the effort to enhance and preserve one of the most identifying places in the city
