TOASTS – The G7 international summit in Brindisi begins this morning at Borgo Egnazia, the heavily armored and luxurious Salento resort near Savelletri, which will host the summit and heads of state until Saturday 15 June.
The news of the last few hours reports the great security measures implemented by our country for the international political meeting, among others the landing, last night at around 11.00 pm, at Brindisi airport of the presidential Air Force plane one of the US president, Joe Biden, who as soon as he got off the plane’s steps boarded a helicopter to be taken to Borgo Egnazia.
One wonders what Biden’s thoughts were, and with him those of international public opinion, upon hearing the news of the deathequestrian event which occurred just a few hours before the cruise ship Mykonos Magic, renamed Goddess of the Nightowned by the shipping company Mykonos Magica Inc. Ship moored in the port of Brindisi and which it should have housed the over two thousand judicial police officers and agents employed in public order and safety services G7, due to the serious critical issues reported by the police force personnel who had just come on board to stay.
Indecent conditions, critical health and hygiene issues and serious housing shortages: clogged toilets, broken pipes, mould, blood on the floor, ended up at the center of the investigations of the Brindisi Flying Squad in collaboration with the various specialist units of the Brindisi Police Headquarters, including the Port Authority and the Nas Carabinieri.
The evidentiary seizure order was ordered by the Brindisi Prosecutor’s Office, led by Antonio De Donno, following the investigations initiated by the Central Police Operational Service and the policemen of the Brindisi Flying Squad. The ship built in 2004, with an overall length of 272 meters and 35 meters wide, currently sails under the flag of Bermuda.
The investigation coordinated by the deputy Antonio Negro sees a hypothesis of «breach of contracts in public supplies and fraud in public supplies», at the moment the legal representative of the shipping company is under investigation. The Central Operational Service of the Police explained that the elements “collected and the need for further investigative investigations, including those of a technical nature, made it necessary to adopt the seizure decree”.
The Ministry of the Interior he made it known that “the logistical, hygienic and health conditions” -“did not correspond to what was agreed” and did not rule out legal action for failure to comply with the contract by the service provider.
GNV AZZURRA
The agents and police officers were transferred partly to hotels and partly on board the GNV Azzurra ship, which in the meantime landed in the port of Brindisi, but even in this case the ship would not be convincing. In fact, the regional secretariat of Siap (Italian police union) sent a letter to the police commissioner of Brindisi, some parts of which we publish below and which leaves the union perplexed regarding “the quality of the accommodation provided” requesting “urgent and decisive intervention ».
We read in the union’s letter: «many colleagues complain about having been transferred from an already critical situation to an even more inadequate solution: the use of the Gnv Azzurra ferry. There is evident disappointment among the staff regarding the treatment received during the current event, especially when compared with previous experiences, such as the G7 in Taormina, where the accommodation conditions were decidedly better and more respectful of the dignity and professional role of the operators. The attitude among operators is one of growing frustration and indignation.
There is a widespread perception of being treated with little consideration and respect, a circumstance which is causing an increase in tension and a strong desire to refuse the current housing conditions, with the concrete threat of an immediate return to their respective places of duty, as already expressed by some team managers. Colleagues cannot and must not be treated this way. It is unacceptable that the State police personnel, involved in an event of such international importance, are treated so inadequately.
We ask that alternative accommodation solutions be provided in accommodation facilities, that they respect the dignity and professional role of the operators, and that a dignified and safe working condition is restored”.
