A “sick” economy: everyone pays protection money but no one reports. It is the disturbing scenario that emerges from the investigations of the Prosecutor’s Office into malfeasance in the Agro. «We have certainty – stated the head of the Salerno Prosecutor’s Office Giuseppe Borrelli – that the extortion phenomenon in the Agro Nocerino is absolutely widespread in the sense that all entrepreneurial activities of a certain importance pay the bribe and this is confirmed by the repeated attacks recorded in the area. Unfortunately, these attacks do not correspond to as many complaints.” The investigations were complicated by the very strong climate of silence in the Agro, where – continued the prosecutor “no complaint is ever registered”. «It seems strange to me – he said – that explosions of gunshots and incendiary devices occur, always by chance or for fun. The activity of my office has demonstrated not only that it provides timely responses but also guarantees those who report from any retaliatory action: the State is there don’t be afraid to report even anonymously.”
The many extortions carried out by the clan have demonstrated, in the opinion of the investigators who are always careful to photograph new criminal scenarios, another incontrovertible fact: the Camorra in the Agro is no longer a phenomenon linked to the Neapolitan area. “In the’Agro Nocerino Sarnese – stated Borrelli – there are now autonomous groups and the belief that exclusively Neapolitan organizations ready to carry out “raids” into the Agro operate in that territory has been dispelled. The investigations revealed worrying conflicts with groups in the Torre area.
