In Rome, Italy is the queen of the European athletics championships. Having risen to first place in the medal table, it is the best national team ever. The numbers speak for themselves: halfway through the twenty-sixth edition of this international competition, he has already surpassed his medal record set in Split ’90, when he won 5 golds and 12 medals overall.
This year, however, eight gold medals:
– Antonella Palmisano, 20km women’s walk
– Nadia Battocletti, 5000m women
– Leonardo Fabbri, shot put
– Lorenzo Ndele Simonelli, men’s 110m hurdles
– Marcell Jacobs, men’s 100m
– Yemaneberhan Crippa, men’s half marathon
– ITALY, men’s team half marathon (Crippa, Riva)
– Sara Fantini, hammer throw
Six silvers:
– Valentina Trapletti, 20km women’s walk
– ITALY, 4x400m mixed relay (Luca Sito, Anna Polinari, Edoardo Scotti, Alice Mangione)
– Mattia Furlani, men’s long jump
– Chituru Ali, men’s 100 meters
– Pietro Riva, men’s half marathon
– Filippo Tortu, 200 meters man
And three bronzes:
– Francesco Fortunato, 20km men’s walk
– Catalin Tecuceanu, 800m men
– Zaynab Dosso, women’s 100m
The medal table could have been larger if Luca Sito, after having set the new Italian record in the semi-final (44”75), had obtained a podium in the 400m final. Instead he had to settle for fifth place. Likewise Elisa Molinarolo and Roberta Bruni finished sixth and seventh in the women’s pole vault final.
No medal also for Osama Zoghlami and Yassin Bouih who finished eighth and fourteenth respectively in the men’s 3000m steeplechase final.
