European Archeology Days, the wonders to discover

European Archeology Days, the events promoted by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of L’Aquila and Teramo.

There Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of L’Aquila and Teramo joins, also for 2024, in the days 14, 15 and 16 Juneat European Days of Archeology (GEA), with nine events in the area, organized by its technical staff, in collaboration with local actors, such as universities, municipalities and associations. The European Archeology Days are aimed at promoting the archaeological heritage and making the work of the archaeologist known through guided tours, workshops, excursions and other organized events.
The GEAs were born in 2010 thanks to the French Ministry of Culture and the INRAP (Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives) and since 2019, the year in which the activity acquired international scope beyond the French borders, the Italian Ministry of Culture has joined with its own activities of the general directorates of Museums and Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape.

The gardens – Queen’s Palace and the Pagus of “Betifulo”
14 June 2024 at 4.30 pm, Scanno, “Guido Calogero” auditorium former “Anime Sante”
Open meeting with the public and the community of Scanno on the archaeological investigations conducted between 2010 and 2016. With the participation of the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Provinces of L’Aquila and Teramo, the Municipality of Scanno and the Cultural Association “La Mouth”.

“Archaeological park of the Cunicoli di Claudio”
15 June 2024, Avezzano, Via Alfredo Nobel Avezzano
Guided visit to the archaeological park of the Cunicoli di Claudio to learn about the remains of the imposing work, created by Emperor Claudius for the reclamation of Lake Fucino, between 41 and 52 AD. The route develops inside the Ferraro tunnel.
Clothing suitable for the route inside the tunnel is recommended, helmets will be provided on site.

“Feudo Intramonti and Colle di Licco Oriented Nature Reserves”
15 June 2024 at 10.00, Civitella Alfedena, via Marsicana 83, km 55 (Aq).
Guided tour of the Reserve, in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park together with the Carabinieri of the Biodiversity Department of Castel di Sangro, the Carabinieri of the Protection Unit of L’Aquila and archaeological officials.

“Living in the city. The domus of San Benedetto dei Marsi”
15 June 2024, from 10am to 12.30pm and from 4pm to 6pm, San Benedetto dei Marsi, domus in Corso Vittorio Veneto
The domus inserted in the urban fabric of the ancient city of Marruvium is the largest private building discovered so far. Inside there are mosaic floors of particular value and variety, numerous decorative motifs that adorn the rooms.

“Archaeological research in Corfinio”
15 June 2024, from 10.00 to 13.00, Corfinio, Via Zambeccario,7
The Antonio De Nino Archaeological Museum housed in the palace of the Colella-Trippitelli family (17th century), collects numerous and important archaeological materials from the Roman period, discovered at the end of the 19th century. The collection also includes medieval finds relating to the cathedral of San Pelino.

“1934-2024: 90 years since the discovery of the Warrior Archaeological research in Capestrano”
15 June 2024, 3.30 pm Capestrano, Convent of San Giovanni, state road 602, n. 95
On the occasion of the discovery of the Warrior and the Lady of Capestrano, which occurred fortuitously in September 1934 by the farmer Michele Castagna, archaeological investigations were started in December of that same year, which continue to this day in the necropolis and in the city of Aufinum, 90 years have therefore passed.

“Where the Fucino ends – archaeological walk at the mouth of the Emissary of Claudius”
15 June 2024, 3.30 pm, Capistrello, Piazza Del Municipio
Archaeological walk at the mouth of the Emissary of Claudius, from the Roman era (41-52 AD), subsequently expanded in the second half of the 19th century which still flows into the Liri river today.
Clothing suitable for trekking is recommended.

“The Iron Age necropolis of Piano d’Accio”
16 June 2024, from 09.30 to 12.30 and from 15.30 to 19.00, Teramo, Piano d’Accio, “Ruggero Bortolami” Campus
During preventive archeology activities, burials dating back to the Iron Age were found. At present, two areas of the necropolis have been identified and the burials appear to date back to between the 7th and 6th centuries. BC During the day, visitors will be accompanied by FAI volunteers and guided by the explanations of the professionals currently working on the construction site.

“9.3 million years ago: discovering the paleontological site”
16 June 2024 at 10 am, Piazza di Scontrone (Aq)
Trekking morning between the Upper Miocene and Lower Tortonian with a guided tour of the geosite, to discover the fauna that populated this strip of land 9.3 million years ago, continuing in the afternoon with a visit to the Paleontological Documentation Centre.
