After the controversy that erupted following criticism from police officers’ unions over the conditions of many cabins on board the Mykonos Magic cruise ship which hosts the military on duty in Puglia for the G7, another hotel ship is arriving at the port of Brindisi to integrate the offer of beds.

According to what SHIPPING ITALY has learned, this is the Grandi Navi Veloci GNV Azzurra ferry which at the time of writing is sailing towards Puglia from the port of Pozzallo (Naples). From the ferry company of the MSC Group “no comment on the possibility of renting ferries with the Government”.

After protests from the unions, who denounced the deficiencies on board the Mukonos Magic ship, it was the workers’ representatives themselves who announced that a solution had been found. “After our strong protests, we have just been informed that another ship equipped with 520 beds is arriving in Brindisi by Wednesday, which will allow the disembarkation of as many colleagues from the Mykonos Magic” announced the secretary of the FSP Police of State, Valter Mazzetti, who will be in Brindisi in the morning on Wednesday 12 June, waiting for an inspection for the arrival of the new ship that will host the members of the police force who have arrived in Puglia for the G7, together with the deputy secretary, Fabrizio Lotti , responsible for public order. «This is after the major critical issues that emerged on board the Mykonos Magic, the previous solution identified for the accommodation of security sector personnel» concludes the Fsp note.

The same union sources let it be known that, after the inconveniences reported in the last few hours, “already 70% of the soldiers housed on the same boat have been diverted to hotel facilities in the six provinces of Puglia” according to what was communicated by Nicola Magno, national secretary of the New Union Carabinieri (NSC).

Gnv Azzurra is a ferry ship built in 1981 (with subsequent refits carried out in 1988 and 2003) 142 meters long, 24 meters wide and capable of accommodating 2,180 passengers on board in 570 cabins. In recent years this same ship had been chartered by the Government to host on board migrants arriving from North Africa and required to undergo a quarantine period during the Covid-19 pandemic, while last year it had been positioned for a period of several weeks in the Black Sea for use again as a floating hotel with the Turkish company Defartes Global Services near the port of Filyos for the staff of companies involved in a major job conducted by Turkish Petroleum.
