Florence, 11 June 2024 – So how did it go? Turning points? Surprises? Nothing new? In trying to draw a summary (short) of this first round of 2024 municipal elections in Tuscany, we could say that the region has essentially not changed. Yes, of course there were surprises, but at a regional level the political picture was not distorted. And this could also say a lot about what awaits us in the very near future 2025 regional elections.

Center-left and center-right municipalities

However, returning to the summary of the elections, out of 185 Municipalities voting, 117 went to the center-left (63.2%), 27 to the center right (14.5%), 23 in civic (12.4%), 18 in the run-off.

Elected mayors

As also underlined by the National Association of Italian Municipalities (Anci), which developed data and graphics on the municipal elections, there are 167 mayors elected, all those of the 151 administrations under 15 thousand inhabitants and 17 of the 34 administrations over 15 thousand inhabitants. 107 outgoing mayors have been confirmed, while 60 are in their first term. The elected women? There are 38 (only 23%) against 129 men.

There are five mayors in their fourth term (Scarperia and San Piero, Gaiole in Chianti, Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina, Camporgiano and Fosciandora), 47 in their third term, 55 in their second, 60 in their first.

Political framework and curiosities

We were saying the Tuscany that does not change. The political framework is in fact confirmed by 87%, while there are 21 changes in orientation. However, some reversals of course (towards the centre-right) should be highlighted as Follonica. It had never happened since the post-war period. Or to Lamporecchio where for the first time the left does not win. Or again to Santa Croce sull’Arno moved to the centre-right. And how can we not remember then Stazzemawhere at the European elections there was a boom in the Brothers of Italy, with Giorgia Meloni’s party obtaining 33.77% of the preferences (the Pd 21.86%).

The main ballots

It must be said that many of the main matches are not yet closed and we will have to wait the second round to draw up a general and definitive report. The ballot, which involves municipalities of the caliber of Florence, Empoli, Piombino, Pontedera, Montecatini Termewill be held between Sunday 23rd and Monday 24th June.

Turnout

What about theturnout. Traditionally, municipal elections have always attracted more interest than other elections. But this year too, the decline in those who went to vote, even in Tuscany, was evident. 63.82% of those who were entitled to vote voted in the municipal elections. At the last municipal elections, 2019, it was 68.84%. Five percentage points less, not a few.
