PORTICOS. AT TURTLE POINT A SPECIAL GREETING FOR NEREY THE TURTLE. HIS CONDITIONS IMPROVE

Special greeting at the Turtle Point in Portici for Nerey, the Caretta caretta turtle found in critical conditions last April off the coast of Casamicciola, in the Kingdom of Nettuno marine protected area, by boaters from the island of Ischia. And the person who alerted the emergency services went to the Portici facility to find out Nerey’s state of health.
This is Mr. Vitale Di Napoli who together with his father and his two sons went to visit the turtle just as one would do with a sick relative. The specimen of Caretta caretta was reported to the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station and then, through the work of the island’s Coast Guard and the staff of the marine protected area, it was transferred to the mainland to try to save it. The conditions were critical with a compromised clinical picture. There wasn’t much hope. Today, however, Nerey is much better and has a good chance of returning to sea in the future thanks to the great work they have been doing in Portici for months. Meanwhile, Nerey’s rehabilitation process continues. “The gesture of coming to greet the turtle – says Andrea Affuso, health director of the Turtle Point in Portici – is very beautiful and confirms the sensitivity of these people who may have saved Nerey’s life. The turtle began to eat steadily, but always fed. He continues to use aerosols for the lung pain that is still present, but little by little it improves.”
