The Association “Italian Society of Hydrography” o IHS, a non-profit organization based in Acireale, was founded in 2010 and aims to promote the sciences for surveys and measurements at sea and the related technologies; provide a meeting center and channel for correspondence and exchange of information between technicians and other individuals working in the specific field of hydrography or simply interested in hydrography and allied related sciences; promote and coordinate the study and practice of such sciences and technologies in all or part of their aspects and to accumulate, extend and disseminate information, knowledge and skills relating thereto anywhere in the world.
In 2023 it managed to bring an international event on hydrography to Italy for the first time: Hydro 2023, https://hydro2023.com.
The IHS on the occasion of World Hydrography Day organizes a conference that aims to raise awareness and inform public opinion on the existence and need for hydrography and the professional figure of the hydrographer, as also strategic elements for the development of the sea, diving and its resources in full sustainability and harmony.
Every year, on June 21st, World Hydrography Day is celebrated, which this year the IHO – International Hydrographic Organization – has given as its theme:
“HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION – Improving safety, efficiency and sustainability in marine activities”.
For this event the patronage of the Hydrographic Institute of the Navy of Genoa as well as of the International Hydrographic Organization of Monaco Montecarlo, of the Maritime Directorate of Eastern Sicily, the ARS Sicilian Region Assembly, the City of Acireale, the Italian Red Cross, the AIAS of Acireale, the Italian Institute of Navigation, the National Observatory for the Protection of the Sea, the University of Catania, the La Sapienza University and the UPGC.
Furthermore, the following have joined the initiative as speakers: the AERO Association – Offshore Renewable Energy Association, Fugro SpA, Renantis Blue Floating, INGV – JRU, INFN.
The event will take place in the “ALICE ANDERHUB” conference room of the AIAS in Acireale, from 09.00 to 12.45 on Friday 21 June 2024.
