Alberto Cirio was reconfirmed as president of the Piedmont Region until 2029. The outgoing president was re-elected with over 50% of the votes. No surprise for the deputy secretary of Forza Italia, who already from the exit polls had clearly appeared ahead of Gianna Pentenero (centre-left), Sarah Disabato (M5s) and the other candidates.

The president of the Piedmont Region will be Alberto Cirio for another five years. The Forza Italia candidate, supported by the entire centre-right, won the 2024 regional elections with over 50% of the votes: a clear advantage over his opponents. The exit polls published yesterday evening had already reported that Cirio would take between 50% and 54% of the overall votes, and the first projection placed him at 53%. The forecast was that the main challenger, Gianna Pentenero of the center-left, would remain between 34% and 38%. For Sarah Disabato (5 Star Movement) a result of between 7% and 9% was expected.

Cirio was born on December 6, 1972 in Turin, and pursued politics from a young age. He has a law degree. He stood as a candidate in the municipal elections of Alba (Cuneo) in 1995, with the Northern League, and although he obtained few votes – one hundred preferences, the first of the non-elected and only entered the municipal council in 1998 due to the resignation of a party companion – he was chosen as deputy mayor. He then held the position until 2005, when he was elected to the regional council with Forza Italia.

Since then he has never left FI, of which he is now deputy national secretary. Cirio has also held the position of regional councilor for Tourism, Education and Sport since 2010 in the council of the Northern League president Roberto Cota, and in 2014 with Forza Italia he was elected to the European Parliament. In 2019, then, his first victory as a centre-right candidate in the regional elections. Which today she was clearly reconfirmed. In the past Cirio has claimed his closeness to the world of agriculture – he was president of the National Alba White Truffle Fair and was a member of Confagricoltura di Cuneo, as well as owner of an agricultural company in the hazelnut sector – and politically he tried to present himself as a moderate.

In the regional elections Cirio was challenged by four other candidates. The main one was Gianna Pentenero, former Turin councilor, chosen by the Democratic Party as a compromise figure between the currents closest to Schlein and the more moderate ones. Pentenero was supported by the center-left (Democratic Party, Green-Left Alliance, United States of Europe) and two civic lists, but stopped just above 30% of the votes. Even more severe result for Sarah Disabato, regional councilor of the 5 Star Movement and candidate for president of the Movement, who has not found an agreement with the centre-left. According to projections, Disabato failed to exceed 10% of the votes. She was also a candidate Francesca Frediani, former M5s regional councilor with a long history of No Tav militancy, supported by Popular Piedmont. Finally, the last presidential candidate was Alberto Costanzowith the Libertà list by Cateno De Luca.
