Let us NEVER forget where we come from by Francesco Bianchi, Prato

Making a journey of remembrance today, in light of the ongoing war and the result of the 2024 European elections, is increasingly necessary. We need to think about ways of involving young people to create a historical culture of memory, but not only that, tracing and remembering our past can only help us avoid making the same mistakes and horrors of the past.

Is there much difference between the words of some politicians or pseudo-politicians today and the recruitment campaign of the Republic of Salò? Have we made a journey of memory that will forever remove the tragic errors of the fascist state?

I propose to you a passage taken from the book “THE COURAGE OF THE WON”, which has received many awards including the latest “Best historical novel” at the Rende International Award “A friendly book for the winter”:

At the Lauter camp, the passengers coming from Carpi are lined up and a couple of SS officials and a doctor go through them, checking the state of health of the thinnest or obviously worn-out subjects from the journey. About thirty people are rejected and accompanied to other rooms, while the remainder, including Oliviero and Elio, are assigned a dormitory.

The two brothers, dirty and soaked in stale sweat, head to the assigned hut; here they find other Italians already employed in the forced labor camp. They are all very thin, with long hair and unkempt beards, haggard faces, sunken eyes and hollow cheeks. They are wearing worn-out clothes, probably the same as when they were captured.”
