CAGLIARI – Two first times in the saber: the last individual titles awarded at the Cagliari 2024 Italian Absolute Championships go to Luca Curatoli and Michela Battiston.
The saber competition sees the first tricolor joy of Luca Curatoli’s career. The Neapolitan athlete of the Fiamme Oro, a cornerstone of the Italian national team for years and soon to compete in his second Olympics in Paris, breaks his very personal curse at the gates of his 30th birthday (he will turn 30 on July 25th, on the eve of the Games) by overcoming in the final, in a Neapolitan derby, Dario Cavaliere of the Army Sports Center won 15-11. Bronze medals for Mattia Rea of the Carabinieri Sports Center, stopped at 15-10 in the semifinal by Curatoli, and Enrico Berrè of the Fiamme Gialle, who lost 15-9 against Cavaliere, becoming the protagonist of a moment of great fair play when, after asking and having obtained a favorable video review at 14-8 despite no longer being entitled to it (he had already used his two slots), he easily lets himself be touched for the last jab. Among the applause of the PalaPirastu audience.
It’s also a first for Michela Battiston. The Friulian from the Air Force became Italian champion in the women’s sabre, beating Martina Criscio of the Fiamme Oro 15-14 at the end of an exciting final full of twists and turns, resolved only with the last thrust. Bronze medals for Rossella Gregorio of the Carabinieri Sports Center, overcome 15-13 at the end of a good semifinal against Criscio, and Eloisa Passaro of the Fiamme Oro, who lost with exactly the same score to Battiston.
Before the semi-finals, the President of the Italian Fencing Federation, Paolo Azzi, awarded the Siclari Award to the best referee of the season: the winner was Jacopo Rubini from Livorno, a saber specialist.
The Federal President also presented awards for the great organizational effort to the Athos Academy of Arms in the persons of the club managers Ariana Melis, Giuseppe Loiotile and Maurizio Fuccaro, and to the FIS Sardinia Regional Delegate, Gianmarco Tavolacci.
Tomorrow the last day of competitions at the Italian Absolute Championships in Cagliari: the men’s and women’s Serie A1 saber team trials are scheduled.
