The Acerbi al Parco exhibition concludes with “The Greengrocer’s Testament”.

The program of the third edition of the “Acerbi al Parco” exhibition concludes, shows and performances in parks and gardens of the city of Asti, which is attracting the attention and participation of many spectators with very engaging experiences. On Sunday 16 June at 5pm in the garden at the San Fedele Civic Center (in via Trilussa3), there will be the Teatro degli Acerbi show “The greengrocer’s testament”, with Massimo Barbero on stage.

It is a successful theatrical monologue that is doing a lot in Italy and is based on a story by Antonio Catalano, an eclectic artist. The flavor is that of an ancient fairy tale, but the contents are very modern, as it talks about the bond of love and care for Planet Earth, a topic of great relevance and primary importance. The protagonist of the story is the greengrocer Adelmo, who lived in that recent past in which the vegetable garden was the primary source of family sustenance. He received the land from his ancestors, he cultivated it all his life; he learned from his father, but he also invented the profession by experimenting every season, with all due respect to traditions and proverbs; he looked at the phases of the moon a little yes and a little no, because the moon is up there and what does she know about green beans; he cursed the storm and the drought; he started a family and fed it with the fruits of his labor.

The day he finally feels close to death, he wonders what fate his garden will have, in the hands of his son Michele. Receiving a piece of land and farm equipment as an inheritance can be burdensome. But if you enter through that rickety gate even just to clean up, for the decorum of the neighborhood, you risk being fascinated by that varied community of living beings, which continues strenuously even in the disinterest of the new owner.

The garden can thus become a place in which to reflect, in which to rediscover family events, in which to discover the multi-millennial bond between humanity and the Earth, which we must protect as a common inheritance and even more so as a source of life. In short, the garden is the place of Care: where the earth is taken care of, and where the earth takes care of the body and the soul. This is the message sent by the greengrocer, hardworking and good-natured, a philosopher and poet without his knowledge.

Like an ancient “cunto” in which however the deeds are narrated not of brave knights, but of farmers riding Lambrettas, of magical peppers exploding in the sky like fireworks, of stage dances and moons of polenta…
