Giorgia Meloni leads his Fratelli d’Italia party towards 30 percent at European elections. The Democratic Party follows with Elly Schlein, the current leading Italian opposition force, with over 24 percent. Disappointment, however, for Giuseppe Conte, in third position. The 5 Star Movement does not reach 10 percent.
The leader of FdI is preparing to play a key role in the formation of the next European parliament and has been asked for support by various political forces.
The outgoing President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyenof the European People’s Party (EPP), needs Meloni to get a majority. Also Marine Le Pen of the French National Front will ask for the Italian leader’s help to reunite the far right groups, currently divided between Le Pen’s Identity and Democracy (ID) and Meloni’s European Conservatives and Reformists (Ecr).
Fratelli d’Italia stands at just over 28 percent, according to preliminary results. The Democratic Party stops in second position. Giuseppe Conte remains saddened by a meager consensus. Disappointment for Matteo Renzi and Carlo Calenda: their parties do not exceed the 4 percent threshold. Good results for Greens and Left Alliance who exceed 6 percent and obtain the election of Ilaria Salis.
